Bay Area theatre 2007: the critics' lists

posted by Cheshire on Mon, Dec 31, 2007
in Local Theatre

The various Bay Area newspaper theatre critics have published their lists of the best (and worst) theatre offerings of the past year. We already posted about the Express's list, but now they're all online.

Jack Tucker, 1914-2007

posted by Cheshire on Fri, Dec 28, 2007
in News

Jack Tucker, the longtime theatre critic for the West County Times, passed away yesterday morning. Jack was dear to Impact's heart -- he always found time to review our shows, and he was always supportive of our work. Jack stepped down as critic a couple of years ago (at the age of 91, no less), but he continued to see and review shows on his own website. The last time we saw Jack was at the Impact booth at this past summer's Solano Stroll. As always, he had a kind word for us.

The Bay Area has lost a champion of theatre large and small. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.

Our New Year's resolution: more cowbell!

posted by Cheshire on Thu, Dec 27, 2007
in News

OK, not more cowbell, but definitely more blogging. In the new year we want to make Splatter one of your regular stops for Bay Area theatre stuff -- not just Impact news, but also news about other companies as well as discussions of theatre-related issues. We promise to start posting about once a day (hopefully even more) during the week. Hell, we may even redesign a little. If you've got anything you want us to write about, hit us up at info at impacttheatre dot com.

Impact featured in the Express's Top Ten of 2007

posted by Cheshire on Wed, Dec 26, 2007
in News

What a nice way to end the year: the East Bay Express has included Impact's production of Cartoon in "Pillowman and Superman: the year's best in theater," its roundup of the east bay's top 10 plays of 2007. We were also named in the category "Best Show-Stealers" for Helen, Jessica, Rachel, and Monica, our burlesque dancers in Impact Briefs 8: Sinfully Delicious. They're not just super-hot -- now they're critically acclaimed!

Thanks to Sam Hurwitt and the Express for the love. We promise to give you more good things to write about in 2008.

Final 3 performances of Money & Run!

posted by Cheshire on Wed, Dec 19, 2007
in News

This is your very last chance to catch A Very Special Money & Run Winter Season Holiday Special! Spend some quality time this Christmas ('scuse us, holiday season) with Robby Jean Marshall (AKA Money), Jimmy Jake McAllister (AKA Run), O.T., Big Momma Bob, Jimmy Jack Bodeen, Dr. Asswagon, a bunch of other baddies, and that despondent pregnant couple that can't find room at the inn, Meryl and Josephine.

FYI: You'll want to get those tickets in advance. Closing weekend always fills up.

Air Guitar Hero: the Money & Run edition

posted by Cheshire on Fri, Dec 7, 2007
in Fun with Impact

Tonight at intermission we played Air Guitar Hero with the Money & Run theme music. Two contestants got up, picked up their air guitars, and proceeded to shred the shit out of Steve Klems' rockin' theme song. We were going to have the audience pick a winner, but we were so excited by the whole thing we declared it a tie and gave them both Impact button packs.

We're probably going to do it for the rest of the run, so tune up those air guitars and get ready to dominate.

A shout-out on national TV

Impact co-founder (and director of our first production of Money & Run, by the way) Christopher Morrison was on the game show Merv Griffin's Crosswords over the Thanksgiving break, and by some weird coincidence I happened to catch it -- and TiVo it, no less. Check out this sweet little clip in which Morrison gives Impact a shout-out. Thanks, man -- now we're world-famous!

(Side note: I didn't even realize that was him for a second, as I'd come in in the middle -- no, what kept me watching at first was that this game show actually used some good-looking typography. No joke.)

"A sure crowd-pleaser!"

posted by Cheshire on Sat, Dec 1, 2007
in Reviews

So says Sam Hurwitt of A Very Special Money & Run Winter Season Holiday Special in the East Bay Express. He also says it's "pretty damn entertaining" and "more fun than your average holiday offering."

While we're on the subject, Ken Bullock of the Berkeley Daily Planet said the show is "hysterical" and that the cast "does well, with Jeremy Forbing’s direction, in this burlesque of road and buddy pics, caper flicks, and pious holiday fare."
