NPR featured one of Brandon Patton's songs as the song of the day! Impact faithful will remember him as the musical half of the amazing Jukebox Stories (Prince Gomolvilas was the other half). Check it out at:

Impact's third annual Full Houses benefit poker tournament is now only three weeks away. We've built up an impressive prize pool, including attractions like Great America and Teatro Zinzanni, sporting events like the Oakland A's and Cal Football, and restaurants like Doña Tomás and Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen. And our grand prize is a $500 Amazon gift card. Tickets are about a third sold already, so make sure to get yours soon.
...and, as it turns out, that's actually a good thing. A recent issue of Entertainment Weekly let readers in on "The Black List," a Hollywood thing that's been going on for a few years: a studio exec polls other execs around town to gauge the couple hundred hottest scripts of the year. The list has helped scripts get crucial studio attention; Juno and Lars and the Real Girl might never have been made without their appearances on the list. This year's top ten unproduced scripts include one called Fuckbuddies (expect asterisks on the movie poster) by Liz Meriwether. Impact fans may think that name sounds familiar, and it is: back when she went by Elizabeth Meriwether, we produced a play of hers called Nicky Goes Goth. Congrats on hitting The Black List, Liz!
The East Bay Express has included two Impact shows in its top ten plays of 2008! Theatre critic Sam Hurwitt says Ching Chong Chinaman (#3 on the list) gave this season "a thunderous start" and calls last season's Jukebox Stories: The Case of the Creamy Foam (#5) "endlessly entertaining." Sam notes in his intro that he saw more than 100 shows this year; to be in the top ten even once would be an honor, but appearing twice is truly flattering. Our friends at Shotgun were also listed twice (including the #1 slot), and Berkeley Rep has three mentions (plus an honorable for The Arabian Nights, one of my favorite shows ever at Berkeley Rep). It's a great way to close out the year. See you in 2009!
Impact's Bar Mitzvah 13th season continues with Melanie Marnich's haunting drama Tallgrass Gothic, which begins November 13. This is a dark, beautiful play that will chill you to your bones, perfect for the cold winter evenings that are about to be upon us. Tickets are on sale now. You saw what happened with the sold-out signs every night of Ching Chong Chinaman -- don't get left out in the cold.
What an amazing run. Out of 20 performances of Ching Chong Chinaman (two more than usual), only one didn't sell out. And why not? It's a great play with a fantastic cast, crew, and designers/director. Thanks to everyone who came out and made this Impact's biggest hit ever. Now the play is off to take Minneapolis by storm this February. We hope it's as successful for Mu as it was for us.
We're only four weeks into the new season, and I keep seeing signs that this is really Impact's year. New seats, a new door, a hit show... it's really frickin' awesome. But coolest of all, I think, is that we introduced season subscriptions this year, and 26 people have already signed up.
Read the whole thingThere's no two ways about it -- this show is hot. For the second straight weekend, we've sold out every performance (ok, we were three seats shy of a sell-out Thursday night, but Friday and Saturday we turned away many people at the door).
What does this mean for you? Easy: make sure your ticket is waiting for you at the door by purchasing in advance.
We're pleased to announce that Mina Morita has signed on to direct Tallgrass Gothic. Currently the Bret C. Harte directing intern at Berkeley Rep, Mina was the assistant director to Tony Taccone on the world premiere of Yellowjackets, which opened that company's 2008-09 season. Mina has also worked with Shotgun Players, the Bay Area Playwrights Festival, and Active Arts Theatre for Young Audiences. We're excited to have her on board to helm this delicate but powerful play.
Ching Chong Chinaman opened last night to a sold-out crowd, and it went really well. Audience members survived record heat and abysmal parking (thanks, Dave Matthews!) to enjoy the show. We also hosted our first-ever opening-night party in the space. All in all, a very nice way to start our Bar Mitzvah season. This is going to be a big year.
It has been a short but eventful summer, and already the first show of the 2008-09 Bar Mitzvah season is here. Ching Chong Chinaman opens tonight and runs for six weeks. And tonight's show is already sold out! Please make sure to order your tickets in advance so that you're guaranteed seats. For the best value, including reserved seating and a special gift, subscribe.
Today was a lot mellower than yesterday. No load-in this morning, though Impact fans Stephen and Mark didn't know that and showed up early on their own initiative to help out. Sorry, guys, and thanks for staying and helping run the booth. And big thanks so Miyuki and Seth for helping break down the booth and load out. So, so, so, so, so much better than doing it myself.
Read the whole thingWe had our first booth at Caltopia this weekend, and wow, what a haul. Was it the red vinyl booth? (Thanks, Brandina and Vlad!) Was it the Nerf dart game board? (Thanks, Josh and Jon!). Was it the booth babes? (Thanks, Marissa, Miyuki, and Seth!) Was it a meeeeeellion UC Berkeley students out for anything free they could get their hands on?
Read the whole thingLet's see--what's happened so far this summer? Well...
Read the whole thingThe past two performances of 'Tis Pity have completely sold out, and we've had to turn people away. We're psyched about having such a successful show, of course, but we also don't want to disappoint anyone.
There are only four performances left, and if you want to see the show, guarantee your seats by buying your tickets in advance.
The new Splatter email went out today, containing, among other things, an offer of free tickets for Valentine's Day. Want to make sure you don't miss such opportunities? Join the Impact Fan Club.
Read and I are meeting over at La Val's today to start working on the set for Jukebox Stories. I'll be stopping by Ace Hardware on University here in Berkeley before going over. "What?," you say, "A set?! I thought it was 2 couches and strategically placed garbage!" And you would be RIGHT, except THIS is Jukebox Stories: The Case of the Creamy Foam, which requires a bit more than my parents' old rug and the contents of my kitchen trash can. Jon will be over later to do some lighting stuff, and by tomorrow most things will (hopefully) be done. What happens tomorrow? Prince Gomolvilas and Brandon Patton arrive!
By the way: we support local businesses. You should, too.
As Prince and Diana noted earlier, we went away for the weekend, 14 of us, to read plays and talk about the upcoming 08-09 Bar Mitzvah Season. Here are incriminating photos.
We're all going away this weekend to read plays and talk about what we want to achieve next season. Anything in particular you think we should be talking about? Leave a comment here or email info-at-impacttheatre-dot-com.
Tickets are now available for Jukebox Stories: The Case of the Creamy Foam. Last time around, people who saw the show came back again and again and again. We recommend you see it early in the run, since this will probably happen to you too. Just saying.
Jack Tucker, the longtime theatre critic for the West County Times, passed away yesterday morning. Jack was dear to Impact's heart -- he always found time to review our shows, and he was always supportive of our work. Jack stepped down as critic a couple of years ago (at the age of 91, no less), but he continued to see and review shows on his own website. The last time we saw Jack was at the Impact booth at this past summer's Solano Stroll. As always, he had a kind word for us.
The Bay Area has lost a champion of theatre large and small. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.
(Read the San Jose Merc's tribute.)
OK, not more cowbell, but definitely more blogging. In the new year we want to make Splatter one of your regular stops for Bay Area theatre stuff -- not just Impact news, but also news about other companies as well as discussions of theatre-related issues. We promise to start posting about once a day (hopefully even more) during the week. Hell, we may even redesign a little. If you've got anything you want us to write about, hit us up at info at impacttheatre dot com.
What a nice way to end the year: the East Bay Express has included Impact's production of Cartoon in "Pillowman and Superman: the year's best in theater," its roundup of the east bay's top 10 plays of 2007. We were also named in the category "Best Show-Stealers" for Helen, Jessica, Rachel, and Monica, our burlesque dancers in Impact Briefs 8: Sinfully Delicious. They're not just super-hot -- now they're critically acclaimed!
Thanks to Sam Hurwitt and the Express for the love. We promise to give you more good things to write about in 2008.
Well, friends & neighbors, A Very Special Money & Run Winter Season Holiday Special has packed up and returned to good ol' Cudrup County. And we just want to take a moment and thank you for a great 2007. Hope yours was wonderful too, and that 2008 is even better.
See you in February!
This is your very last chance to catch A Very Special Money & Run Winter Season Holiday Special! Spend some quality time this Christmas ('scuse us, holiday season) with Robby Jean Marshall (AKA Money), Jimmy Jake McAllister (AKA Run), O.T., Big Momma Bob, Jimmy Jack Bodeen, Dr. Asswagon, a bunch of other baddies, and that despondent pregnant couple that can't find room at the inn, Meryl and Josephine.
FYI: You'll want to get those tickets in advance. Closing weekend always fills up.
...and what a great time we had on opening night: a full house, a great performance -- what a way to start the run. Even tonight has a pretty good advance!
A word to the wise: some people almost didn't get in last night because they didn't get tickets in advance. Just sayin'...
Shot at 7pm Monday night, edited into the wee hours, and posted by 4:30am Tuesday: it's the brand-new trailer for A Very Special Money & Run Winter Season Holiday Special! You'll forgive us if we don't write more about it -- we're a little tuckered. Go check it out, and we'll see y'all on opening night! (That's tomorrow, by the way.)
P.S. It's also posted on YouTube, if you want to link it up.
You have only three chances left to catch Sleepy -- Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8pm. If you're the sort of person who tends to wait until the final weekend to see a show, your moment has arrived. Buy your tickets now.
So here it is, the news that Impact Fan Club members got about a week ago: we've announced the rest of our 12th season (which we've dubbed the "Seat-of-Our-Pants" season, for a couple of reasons). It includes new stories from old friends, as well as our first-ever non-Shakes classic. Here's the rest of the lineup:
A Very Special Money & Run Winter Season Holiday Special
Jukebox Stories: The Case of the Creamy Foam

In a few minutes, you'll get a confirmation that you've joined the Thumb Splats. Soon you'll be getting some really cool offers and contests from us.
...is coming soon. Did we mention that Impact Fan Club members hear the juiciest news first? Hell, it's free -- you might as well sign up.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Impact booth at the Solano Stroll on Sunday. It was terrific to meet new people and catch up with fans. We had 100 people sign up on the mailing list, and our Impact 6-Pack winner is Annie Organ -- congrats, Annie! See you all at La Val's...
We've just gotten word that in addition to the great prizes we've already lined up for our Full Houses benefit poker tournament, a few more have come in:
And remember, you don't have to win the tournament to get these prizes -- all you need to hit is a full house or better, even if you don't win the hand!
You heard that right -- this ain't your usual theatre benefit event. It's No-Limit Texas Hold-em, and you could win an iPhone or one of many other very cool prizes, including: gift cards to places like Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, and Cody's; theatre tickets to Berkeley Rep, Magic Theatre, SF Playhouse, and more; movie passes; jazz performances; a signed Simpsons script; fine wine; Impact merch; and much more. Poker was meant to be played in a basement, and what better basement than the one below La Val's?
Only 54 seats will be sold, and we expect the tournament to sell out. Make sure you get yours before they're gone. Click here for more info and tickets.
Tickets for Sleepy have now gone on sale. Reserve yours.
On Tuesday, September 4, we'll have a major announcement about -- and special offer for -- the Impact benefit poker tournament. "Full Houses." But the offer is exclusively for members of the Impact Fan Club, and it will only last 24 hours. Are you a member? If not, sign up now.
Can you believe it? The 2007-08 season is about to begin already! Seems like we just put the 2006-07 Season of Sin to bed. No matter, we're gearing back up and starting off with the west coast premiere of Steven Yockey's Sleepy. PR shots have been posted in the press room, tickets are about to go on sale, and before you know it, postcards will be in the mail and posters will be up on shop windows around town. Get ready!
Tonight, for the first time, we completely sold out online. Granted, it's only our third production that we've been selling online, and we've come close a number of times, but this is a first.
What a great way to end an exciting season. Thanks for being part of the Impact family, and stay tuned for news about next season...coming very soon.
Join the Impact Fan Club to hear the latest news first, plus get special offers and free stuff just for Fan Club members. (The most recent email contained links to four exclusive photos of the burlesque dancers from Briefs. You don't want to miss stuff like that, do you?)
Tuesday's email will contain a chance to win a copy of the Impact cocktail book, plus exclusive pictures of the Impact Briefs 8: Sinfully Delicious burlesque dancers. But only Impact Fan Club members get the email. Are you on the list?
A new email went out to the list this morning with a contest in which you could win tickets to Impact Briefs 8: Sinfully Delicious. Just 'cause we're nice like that, here's a peek at the email. Want offers like that delivered right to you? Join the list.
The new email went out today. Didn't receive it? Get on the mailing list.
The PR shots for Impact Briefs 8: Sinfully Delicious have been posted. Careful -- these images may melt your monitor. And don't blame us if you get whipped cream all over yourself.
Wayne Rawley, the playwright behind the Impact hit Money & Run, has just been published alongside the likes of Steve Martin, Christopher Durang, and Elaine May, among others, in the anthology Laugh Lines: Short Comic Plays, and his contribution has been singled out as the best one.
Read the whole thingI just got word that Thursday night, during a performance at American Repertory Theatre by Mike Daisey (a monologuist in the Spalding Gray tradition), a group abruptly got up, all 87 of them, and walked out. On the way out, one person dumped water on Mike's table, damaging the original copy of his notes (he performs without a script, and his handwritten notes are his original outline). Reports are that the protesters were part of a Christian group, but I don't know any more details than that. Update: it was a public high school group, from California no less (albeit part of red-state California), but the chaperones indeed invoked their Christianity as the basis for the protest.
Here's the whole thing caught on video.
Mike is someone I know (he's performed at Berkeley Rep), and I like him personally. I'd hate for this to happen to anyone, but I'm especially angry that it happened to Mike. They could have just walked out -- it would have been extremely rude and bewildering, but it would still have been free speech (mostly). The extra action of pouring water on his notes is where it really crossed the line. It's a constitutional right to declare publicly that you don't like something, but it's utterly unconscionable to attempt to destroy someone's art.
Of course you'd expect me to say this, but the show is really, really good. People will be talking about the ending for years to come. If you've seen Measure for Measure before, I guarantee you've never seen it like this. If you've never seen Measure, once you see ours, it'll ruin every other production for you for the rest of your life. Guaranteed. You come back at the end of your life, and if what I say turns out not to be true, I'll totally refund your ticket. No questions asked.
Get your tickets now -- they're already selling briskly, and our previous Shakespeares have sold out, so don't wait.
A lot of people took us up on our 2-for-1 offer, which was heartening. What? You didn't know about it? Make sure you're on the mailing list so you don't miss a similarly terrific offer the next time around.
The email went out this morning with a special offer, good for today only. You want to know what it is, but you're just not sure if you really want to commit to being on our mailing list to receive such good news in your inbox? Well, if you can keep a secret, here's what the email said.
This week Impact held its first-ever donor event, a rehearsal of Measure for Measure and a talk with Artistic Director Melissa Hillman, who is directing this play as she has with all of Impact's Shakes productions.
Donors at the Solid Hit level and above ($50+) have as one of their benefits a chance to watch a rehearsal and talk with the artists involved. I was thrilled by the enthusiasm our donors showed when I sent out the invitation -- even those who couldn't attend said how excited they were about the chance to go behind the scenes at Impact.
And everyone who came had a great time (I'm not just guessing at this; I have the emails to prove it!). Melissa talked for about half an hour before the rehearsal as actors trickled in. She recounted the history of Impact and our stabs at Shakespeare, she explained her philosophy behind making our productions contemporary, and she let her freak flag fly with a discussion of Elizabethan language that only a dramatic lit PhD can pull off with authority.
I'm so glad this has proved to be such a popular benefit. Want to get in on the action? Become a donor, and all this and more can be yours. (There are still pizza-and-beer coupons up for grabs, but there are only a few left, so hurry before they're gone.)
The cool kids sure are excited about this Twitter thing, so we decided to hop on it before it becomes uncool.
(beat)
The headline says it all: we're fully cast and at full throttle. Plus we've got high-res press photos you can download, and the press release, poster and postcards are on the way. Oh, and tickets are now available.
This has been a fantastic year for Impact actors and playwrights past and present so far, what with Joshua Huston going on in The Pillowman at Berkeley Rep and Peter Sinn Nachtrieb winning the prestigious Will Glickman Award. Now we have two more Impactians who are movin' on up: Enrique Urueta and Noah James Butler!
Read the whole thingMeasure for Measure (Shakespeare; directed by Melissa Hillman) just went into rehearsals and we're still seeking to fill the roles of the Provost and Barnardine (update: we have a Barnardine!). Must be non-AEA. $125 stipend.
Just a reminder that Cartoon closes this weekend. There are only three performances left, this Thursday-Saturday 8pm. Closing weekend often sells out, so don't wait until the last minute. Reserve your tickets before it's too late.
We instituted a comment-registration system on the blog to keep the spammers out. Unfortunately it was also keeping legitimate commenters out. I still don't know why it was happening, but I was able to find out what was breaking it. The problem was that TypeKey login was working ok, but if you put your name, email address or URL in any of the commenting boxes, it logged you off TypeKey and blocked your comment.
After many, many, many hours of trying to fix the problem, instead I finally simply eliminated the problem. You still log in with your TypeKey id, but I took out everything but the comment box.
Very sorry for the headaches. Commenting should work now.
So...we're thinking about hosting an Impact Oscar Night at La Val's, Sunday, February 25. We haven't checked it out with La Val's to see whether we could take over the big screen TV upstairs, but since it's coming up soon, we thought we'd check it out with you and see what you think about the idea.
Basically it would be like your standard Oscar party, with an Oscar pool (prizes such as Impact 6-Packs, T-shirts, etc.). This isn't really a fundraiser so much as another way to have fun with Impact. We're thinking one of two ways we could do it:
1) $5 per person, or
2) $10 per person, including pizza and soda
What do you think? Comment and let us know!
I hated to have to do this, but as the spam attacks have increased quite dramatically, it was finally time to institute commenter registration. Like most other blog owners who use the Movable Type software, we've elected to go with TypeKey. Don't worry, it doesn't mean we're keeping tabs on you. In fact, since so many other blogs also use TypeKey, all you have to do is register once, and you're good to comment automatically on thousands of blogs, not just ours. So please go to TypeKey and get yourself registered so we can hear what you have to say. Thanks, homeslice.
Impact already produces kickass theatre at prices everyone can afford, plus we're the only game in town where you can eat pizza and drink beer while you watch the show. So how can we make it any better? By giving you two free admissions, leaving you more money for pizza and beer!
Introducing the Impact 6-Pack, a card that gives you six admissions for the price of four -- you can use it just for yourself or for any number of people in your party, and it never expires. Here's how flexible it is: use it just for yourself, and you'll get into two shows for free; take a date to two shows, and the third one's on us; or bring five people with you to a show, and two of y'all get in free. How cool is that?
We just found out that three of Impact's shows made it into the Daily Cal's "Top Ten Plays of 2006" list. They singled out this season's Jukebox Stories and Colorado and last season's Hamlet.
(By the by, only one other company had three shows on the list, and that's Berkeley Rep. Pretty nice to be ranked the same as the big kids on the block, no?)
Congratulations to the playwrights, directors, cast and crew on making such a winning year for Impact. Have a great holiday season, and we'll see you in 2007!
Want the best seats in the house, even if you show up five minutes before curtain? How about a free extra-large pizza and a pitcher of beer (or soda) to go along with that? How about all kinds of other perks? Become an Impact donor, and all these things could be yours. Not only that, most of your donation will be tax-deductible.
Please help Impact meet our budget and realize our dreams of securing comfortable seating and eliminating noise from La Val's during the show. For all the info about how you can make a big Impact, click here.
Thanks!
You may noticed that we've tinkered once again with the home page layout. At the top is now a "latest news" section. This frees up the Splatter blog to be what we originally intended it to be, a place where we could rant, rave and riff all we wanted. Anything you're interested in knowing about Impact or want to see covered on the blog? Leave your suggestions in the comments.
This is it, people -- only two weekends left for Colorado! Performances have been selling out lately, but we can't extend. So see it while you can -- call 510 464-4468 for reservations.
Colorado is off to a running start -- Thursday's opening was one of the best in Impact history: full house, fantastic show, lots of beer. The full reviews have yet to come out, but already we're getting notices like "funny, sassy and often penetrating" (accompanied by a clapping Little Man from the SF Chronicle). Check back Monday and Tuesday for more reviews. And remember, we can't extend, so don't miss your chance to see the show -- call 510 464-4468 for reservations.
We've hit the national stage, and all because we're true to who we are as a company and who you are as an audience. And we couldn't do it without you. The online article is incomplete -- the print article finishes with a mention of Colorado and a photo from the show -- but we're mentioned at the top, and Melissa gets the first word in. Yay, Melissa!
Impact will have a booth at the Solano Stroll this Sunday, September 10. Come hang out with us and enjoy the performances and food. Bring sunscreen!
Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's deliciously dark comedy Colorado begins in just over two weeks. After the smash success of his Hunter Gatherers earlier this summer, we expect the newly gigantic Peter Nachtrieb Fan Club will be descending on La Val's to sell this sucker out. Unlike Hunter Gatherers, though, we don't have the luxury of extending, so if you don't want to miss this show, reserve your tickets now by calling 510 464-4468.
For you download-happy kids, there are press images to be had as well. Want us to put up desktop wallpapers of the poster art? Leave a comment.
I was just interviewed for an article in Variety. It was a lot less frightening than it sounds because the guy who interviewed me was AWESOME. He was super nice, smart, and cool. The article should come out at the end of Spetember. Trust me-- we'll let ya know.
Susan Heidi, a talented pinup artist, has posted a very nice review of Sinfully Delicious, our cocktail book featuring the Impact Pinup Girls. Check out the review and poke around her sinfully delicious site while you're at it -- it's really well done.
That's right, Sinfully Delicious: The Impact Theatre Cocktail Book is finally available! Featuring 14 original drink recipes, each accompanied by gorgeous full-color photos of the Impact Pinup Girls, this is the must-have book for your wet bar, coffee table or nightstand. Only $17 for the printed version (a very nice, perfect-bound book), and a ridiculously low $7 for a high-resolution downloadable PDF. Click here for all the details.
Everyone who's on the Impact mailing list got 2-for-1 tix to House of Lucky this weekend. Want some love like that? Join the list.
Seems like it snuck up on ya, didn't it? House of Lucky officially opens Friday, but there's a pay-what-you-wish preview tomorrow night. Make your reservations now at 510 464-4468.
We're always looking for a few awesome people to join our crack team of technicians. Currently those people are stage managers and designers of ALL TYPES for the upcoming season! Email infoATimpacttheatreDOTcom for more info. Do it now!
Pleasure activist Carol Queen, founding director of the Center for Sex & Culture and Staff Sexologist at Good Vibrations, will be reading from her latest book, Whipped, at Impact's Night of Sin.
And you think you're naughty.
The mother of JonBenet Ramsey has died. What does this have to do with Impact? You'll just have to come see Colorado when it opens September 14th.
Our 11th season is huge. HUGE. We're presenting an unprecedented six-play season, overstuffed with every single thing we do best--new plays, a badass bard, a new round of Impact Briefs--and infused them all with a generous portion of sin. That's right, it's the Season of Sin at Impact, and every production contains at least five of the seven deadly sins. Now that's some quality sinning.
Not only that, but this season marks our first-ever benefit, Impact's Night of Sin. It's chock-full of performances, games, and other activities we're sure you'll regret the next morning. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 12. Tickets go on sale Monday, July 3.
And one more huge thing for our 11th season and beyond: you're looking at it, homeslice--it's a fresh, hot website redesign. It's wider, sleeker, and bloggier, and it's got some cool new features:
So get ready for a huge 11th season from Impact. And leave us comments--because now you can.
